本書摘要：全書412頁，文字8萬字，圖片超過1000幅，除前言外，分為二十章。第一章討論十七世紀西方強權與傳教士對台灣建築的影響。第二章至第六章談台灣日治時期的建築發展。第七章至第十九章為戰後至目前台灣建築的發展。第二十章也是結論，討論當代台灣建築師如何努力在台灣創造一種屬於台灣品牌的建築。

本書說明：2013年申請人獲國立成功大學規劃與設計學院頂尖大學經費補助，以台灣建築及文化遺產為對象，撰寫此本英文專書，經台灣建築學會出版委員會(專家學者組成)與理監事會通過出版。此書是全球第1本有關完整台灣近現代建築的英文專書，是申請人前後歷經20年才完成。過去有關台灣建築發展的著作，幾乎全部為中文，受限於資料之取得，國外幾乎也沒有此課題的英文專書，因此本書的出版有高度學術意義與價值，出版後頗受好評。而選擇由台灣建築學會先行出版，也有其含義。因為該學會為台灣建築學術界最大且最主要的學會，有關全球第一本英文台灣建築史在自己國家出版，是極有特殊意義。

Brief Description: 412pages, 80,000 words, more than 1,000 illustrations. In addition to the introduction, this book contains 20 chapters. The first chapter is the discussion on the influences of the 17th century Western powers and 19th century missionaries on Taiwanese architecture. The contents of the chapter two to chapter 6 are the discourse on architecture during the Japanese colonial period while the contents of the chapter seven to chapter nineteen devoted to the discussion on postwar architecture in Taiwan. The contents of the Chapter 20, the conclusion, are the discourse on how to establish a brand for new architecture in Taiwan.

Additional Explanation: The book received funding from the Headquarters of University Advancement at the National Cheng Kung University, which is sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, ROC. The book, with the theme of modern architecture in Taiwan, was double-reviewed by the publication Committee and board committee by the Architectural Institute of Taiwan; it is the first English book in the world with complete information on the development of modern architecture in Taiwan. The applicant spent more than 20 years to complete the book. In the past, there is hardly any English book related to this subject. Therefore, the publication of this book is highly meaningful from viewpoint of architectural research and the book has received positive evaluations. The fact that this first English book on Taiwan's modern architecture was published by the Architectural Institute of Taiwan is also meaningful because the institute is the most important academic institute in Taiwan and to publish an English book on its own country's modern architecture is a significant event.
